Celebrations all around

It is hard to imagine being born on a holiday, sharing your special day of being born with a national holiday. But this is something that my husband Joe has to think of every year. He was born on February 14. Valentines Day for everyone else, but a time of celebrating his birth for our family.

So what to do? Since we have been married, we settle the issue by celebrating Valentines Day on February 13 or 15 (and we also miss the restaurant crowds), and celebrate his birthday on February 14.

I hear comments from so many other people that share the same dilemma. They either have a birthday on the exact same day or on a day near enough to another holiday that they miss out on receiving a separate celebration and sometimes even a separate present.

If you are out there and have a similar situation, or know of someone, I would love to hear what you do to celebrate the birthday and holiday.

David, you can speak up. I know since your birthday is January 5 that sometimes happens to you.

  1. Yep, you’re right. Good for you for making February 14 a special day for Joe every year. Since my birthday is January 5 growing up I would sometimes receive the proverbial Christmas/Birthday gift. Wow, how special is that?! Thank you for addressing this very important issue and for raising the awareness of how important it is to separate birthdays from holidays. Everyone who’s birthday is on or near a holiday deserves to have their birthday be a special day of it’s own. It just takes a little bit of extra effort from friends and family in making that happen.
