Social Media – Is it too overwhelming?

I did a survey a while back asking people which types of social networking sites they use. I wasn’t surprised to see Facebook as the #1.
Facebook 75%
Myspace 50%
Twitter
Flikr
YouTube 25%
LinkedIn 12%

I was surprised to see that more people were not on YouTube. I guess I am the only one that loves the “Laughing Baby” video or the “Akmed the Terrorist” act.

I have to say that I am trying to stay up on Facebook now that I was “called out” for my birthday. Let me explain. When I set up my Facebook account a while back, I only did it because I was getting invitations from a few friends. I didn’t really intend on using it but I thought I would set up something anyway. Since I wasn’t going to use it I decided to use my “other” birthday, you know, the one that I use when I don’t want to share information with nosy applications online that require you to put in your age. SO, I put in January 1.

The birthday wishes that flooded me on January first not only were a surprise, but had me laughing uncontrollably. It did say to me that 1) people to look at Facebook and actually notice the small things like your birthday 2) I need to put in my real day, but not necessarily my real year 3) I needed to put in my real name, not just my initials.

So, I am now on Facebook and actually have an app on my iPhone so I can randomly track what others are doing and even post a simple message on my wall when I have the time.

As Stephanie says, “we live in such an electronic age.” Yes we do! But I also realized that if people were like me, they didn’t really have a lot of time just to surf and see what was out there. You visit your favorite blogs, check out what is happening with friends on Facebook and if there is a video link, you may go to YouTube.

  1. I just started using Linked In. I am blessed to be in a profession I enjoy. I find it exciting to be able to really geek out other with the same specific interests. I hate being tied to a specific service. I would wrather a more open social application. Maybe we will make one. Thanks for the post
