All about Weight

Polling stats: If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be.
44% weight
33% marital status
22% location

I have to admit that I was shocked to see that the number one thing that people would change about themselves would be weight. I expected it to be financial or even marital status (knowing that there are several single people who follow my blog and this did come in a close second).

So what does this mean? I have been pondering this all week as the results seemed to be supporting that answer. Then, I thought about what we see on TV and how that impacts our concept of how we should look.

The Biggest Loser: That is what I am watching as I sit here and blog. I am also eating my Skinny Cow ice cream dessert. Hungry from my salad, low fat sandwich and baked chips for lunch. Yes, dieting and losing weight has become even more of a consideration in our society. I talk to people at work and they are either going to lose weight (in their future plans) or they are currently working out and dieting trying to get off those extra pounds.

Dove Real Beauty Campaign: Over the past year you may have seen the commercials from Dove as they travel the country talking to young girls to educate them as to what real beauty is. It is not the images from Hollywood with actresses that have their ribs and collar bones sticking out because they have starved themselves to get the latest part in a TV show or movie. It is developing a healthy lifestyle by eating right and exercising. You may not be 5’10” and weigh 120 pounds, but you can still be healthy and look fabulous.

Final thought: Why does eating healthy cost more? I would think that putting in all the additives and preservatives would cost more than providing a simple alternative. For example, why is organic vegetables (which uses all-natural ways of growing them) more expensive than other vegetables (which use natural fertilizers like manure, which I believe is free). Go figure.

  1. There has been nothing like taking myself off an optional, eternal diet and creating for myself a permanent (albeit no-longer-voluntary)lifestyle change to make me see the scope of this issue.I am angry because of the difference in how I’m treated by people who didn’t know me 2 months ago and won’t remember me tomorrow. I’m angry because somewhere along the way I’ve crossed back over that magical line back into what “they” want me to be. And mostly I’m angry because I’ve allowed all of those things to define me my whole life. And anyone who’s ever battled weight can tell you that it’s not just a physical battle. It’s an emotional one. It’s a spiritual one. It’s larger… much larger… than the individual.
