Taking Responsibility

I thought I would be off my soap box after yesterday’s rant, but I have to stay on a little longer to explore one more subject.

Today is the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The news media cannot get enough of the tragedies that happened as a result of the disaster and keep emphasizing the fact that the government did not do enough at that time and still falls short in providing sufficient help.

To quote John Stossel, “Give me a break!” Does anyone take personal responsibility anymore? People were told to get out of the city before the hurricane struck. Transportation was provided and people decided, ON THEIR OWN, to stay. No one will say, “It was my own stupidity that got me in this mess.” Yes, the government may have reacted slowly, but moving on, what is next? Do you want to wallow in self pity or take responsibility and change something?

This leads me to address the greater problem of personal responsibility. It seems like these days everyone wants to blame someone else for what is wrong in their life. Yes, at times they have a right to be angry at their circumstances. But, can you blame McDonald’s for making hot coffee when it was YOUR FAULT that you spilled it on yourself and were burned? Can you also blame them for making the food that YOU EAT that makes you overweight?

Why not blame cable TV providers for being overweight? They provide the mega channels that make us sit in front of the TV and get no exercise and get fat, right? Or, why not blame the government for skin cancer? They are responsible for global warming, which in turn eats the ozone, which in turn lets more UV rays through to burn your skin and cause cancer, right?

We pass off responsibility for raising our children to daycare workers or schools then complain and blame others when they grow up with no respect and morals.

I may have gone a little overboard on this one, but I have no one to blame but myself for my lack of self control. OH, and remember when you point a finger at somebody else, you have three pointing back at yourself.

  1. Preach it, sister!!! I couldn’t agree more. One of my favorite phrases throughout school and while working in the school last year was “You made a bad choice.” It sounds so simple, but if nobody in your life is telling you, “Hey! Had you chosen differently, you wouldn’t have anything to complain about,” then you never really think things through. Then we end up with an entire society or blame seekers. Maybe the blame is not so far away as you would think…
