Primitive Camping…

For those of you who know the meaning of Primitive Camping, you can probably skip this entry. For the rest of you, let me enlighten you to the TRUE meaning of primitive camping. It all started with an innocent looking brochure that my husband and I picked up at the Fort Worth Stock Show. The brochure featured water sports, relaxation, swimming, camping and more at Possum Kingdom Lake. Needing some time away after hosting company, finishing a semester at school and other general stresses, we decided to go camping (NOTE that this is our first camping trip together as a couple). My husband looked through the brochure and found “Paradise on the Brazos” for camping. Description: Primitive camping by the Brazos River. Showers and toilets on premise.

So off we head on our first camping trip. When we finally arrive at our destination, we realized why there were “no reservations needed.” The camp site was on the back end of a ranch, a 1 mile, bumpy drive through cow pastures (YES, cow pastures), past a couple of decent camping sites (cleared of cactus and full of people) and a porta potty (the only one for the entire location). We finally found a free campsite (at least 100 yards from the toilet) that had just been cleared. Let me explain cleared. The cacti were smashed down but not raked or cleared away.
Seeing this was the only place open (and it was private) we began to set up camp.

Within the first 2 hours that we were there, we picked cactus needles out of our feet (thank goodness I had brought tweezers); used the closest toilet facilities (behind a bush) and sweated gallons putting up the tent and canopy (thinking we could take a shower). Little did we know that the closest shower was at the entry of the ranch, 1 mile away! (A swim in the lake never felt so refreshing)

Now that you know what primitive camping is, let me tell you what a great time we had! My husband and I realized that we truly enjoy each others company and that we are perfect for each other. We had wonderful quality time talking, sharing and laughing. We realized we are a great TEAM and that we are both easy to get along with and complain very little. If you are married, I hope you have the opportunity to share in an experience like Primitive Camping with your spouse to grow even closer together.

This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.

  1. We have discovered “Cabin Camping,” complete with kitchen and bath. It provides the same togetherness without the hygiene issues =). The fact that you had a great time proves once and for all that you are a better woman than I am!! (It helps when you have a great guy, doesn’t it?). Love you!
